From a village next to a few coal mines and a metallurgical factory, a city grew up. Doneck was officially given a city status in 1917. Five years later, its name changed to Stalino. Doneck got its name in 1961, after a river which is not flowing through the city. After world war II, Doneck was damaged a lot, but recovered quickly thanks to the abundance of raw materials in its neighborhood. In the 80s, Doneck reached 1 milion inhabitants. Today, the number of inhabitants is similar. Most of the Doneck inhabitants are pro-Russian. The Russians comprise approximately half of Doneck population and mostly Russian is spoken in Doneck.
